Vision:
The premise of Flower Threads is to be part of a regenerative, soil-to-soil system. We create pieces made of plant fiber & natural dyes that are capable of safely composting back into the soil at the end-of-life. Our vision is to live in a world in which it is the norm for us to have wardrobes comprised of healthy, compostable fashion from our Fibershed.
Fibershed: A geographic region and its network of fiber flows that connect a regional supply chain & utilize climate-beneficial farming practices.
Current Issues:
There is an imbalance throughout the entire global fashion supply chain, from exploitation of garment workers to pollution of waterways to landfills of clothing. There are unprecedented volumes of clothing being discarded in Chile, Kenya, Ghana, etc. The majority of these garments are made of fossil-fuel derived, toxic materials. They have a harmful impact on the planet, as well as our bodies.
"We must recognize that the fashion industry does not only design clothes, it designs supply chains, and in turn, it designs environments"
- Collective Fashion Justice
Process:
We seek to partake in a more beautiful, balanced, cyclical system! We source fabrics that are at least 95% plant fiber, and when possible, from a Fibershed. After sourcing, garments are sewn/ dyed/ embroidered in Miami. Our fabric scraps are composted at our local compost. We have a full ingredient list and an end-of-life plan for each piece.
We are looking to connect more with producers in each part of the supply chain - fiber farmers, millers, spinners, weavers, dyers - so that we can eventually become fully integrated into a Fibershed.
